Impressive Crazy Horse Memorial

The Crazy Horse carving is 641 ft long and 563 ft high and has been in progress for about 74 years! It’s taking a lot longer to build than nearby Mt Rushmore because the scale is larger and it’s all done by private funding.

South Dakota was our 20th state! We stayed one night at the Elk Mountain Campground in the park near the visitor center. The first thing I did was pull out our mat and take a nap since the weather was perfect and all you could hear was the wind blowing in the surrounding grasslands.

Overnight we were surprised to wake up and find a snow storm rolled in and covered the dunes with 2-3” of snow so the entire landscape was now white. We went back and actually hiked the dunes proper from the main Dunes parking lot near the visitor center.

Cliff Dwellings at Mesa Verde National Park

Mesa Verde National Park includes over 4,500 archeological sites with only 600 of those being the cliff dwellings that the park is famous for. It was very fascinating to learn about the Ancestral Pueblo people, and their homes, and see the changes in their architecture over long periods of time.

We really liked two things about this zoo: 1) Many animals to feed and most cost $0.50, 2) Variety of animals in the petting zoo including baby deer. Bonus: Great Boondockers Welcome host just a few blocks away.
